Cannabis is the Pioneer of Online Selling 

Did you know that cannabis was the first product to have been sold and bought online? Now you do. Cannabis was sold by a bunch of MIT students to other students from Stanford.

Even before the internet as we know it today existed Arpanet, a network that founded the internet, in 1969. Only a few years after Arpanet was available to the public with the use of the Ivy League education that MIT and Stanford students have been receiving, cannabis online transaction started around 1971 and 1972! This ushers the online transactions that we have right now.

Cannabis Consumption by Humans can be Traced Back as Far as 2,500 Years Ago

A group of researchers in the far-west region of China managed to explore a cemetery to look for proof on the earliest date of cannabis consumption. This exploration became successful with a result that traced the earliest evidence of cannabis consumption by humans around 2,500 years ago.

Traces of cannabis have been found in the same cemetery before but it was unclear if the cannabis was used for consumption or for ritual purposes. However, a study made in 2019 showed that the cannabis was burned containing great amounts of THC, solidifying the success of the research.

Cannabis was 100% Legal Until the 1920s

You definitely read that right. Cannabis was legal both in the US and Canada until the 1920s!

Cannabis consumption was legal throughout Canada until 1923 where it was deemed illegal for consumption when it was added to the Confidential Restricted List under the Narcotics Drug Act Amendment Bill.

The First Country to Legalize Recreational Cannabis was Uruguay

Haven’t heard of this country before? You should as it made history back in 2013 to be the first country to legalize the recreational use of cannabis.

Legal purchase of cannabis wasn’t made available until 2017 though, almost three and a half years from the legalization. But when it was made available, 1,250 packages were sold within the first six-hours with people creating a two-block line eagerly waiting to finally get a taste.

Hollyweed First Existed Back in 1976

The Hollywood sign in Los Angeles has seen its fair share of vandalization.  Back on New Year’s Day of 2017, a man named Zachary Cole Fernandez changed the Hollywood sign to say “Hollyweed.”

But he wasn’t the first!

In 1976, an art student with the name of Daniel Finegood pulled the first-ever “Hollyweed” prank. This prank was also done on New Year’s Day; tradition am I right? It was said that he did it to support the decriminalization of cannabis at the time and he reportedly said that he used it for his art project. Apparently, he got away without any charges and even got an A+, making his parents very proud.

Italy’s Air Had Traced Amounts of Cannabis Present Back in 2012

A study showed cannabis present in the air of Colosseum, Pantheon, and seven other major cities in Italy back in 2012. The research monitored the cities of Italy for over one year starting in May 2010.

Results of the study showed a peak in the presence of caffeine and cannabinoids during the winter. 

The First Arrest for Cannabis Possession and Sale Happened in 1937

Does keeping track of your taxes bore you? Well here’s a fun fact about cannabis and taxes. The first cannabis-related arrest was in Denver, Colorado in 1937. Not for the reason, you may have.

The “Marihuana Tax Act of 1937” was enacted in the United States on October 1st, 1937. This taxed all cannabis sales. The American Medical Association actually opposed this law because it taxed pharmacies with cannabis prescriptions.

A man named Samuel R. Caldwell was arrested the day after the tax law was implemented. His sentence lasted for four years. So you see, the first cannabis arrest was because of TAX!

“Canvas” and “Cannabis” are Related

Canvases were previously made out of hemp. Out of hemp, did you know that?! The word canvas directly translated to “a sturdy cloth made from hemp or flax.”

The origin of the word canvas is possible descendants of the Vulgar Latin ‘cannapaceus’ meaning “made of hemp.” Which originates from the Greek κάνναβις (which translates to cannabis).

Maybe that’s why a lot of cannabis users bring out their artistic nature while consuming the product.

Cannabis and Beer are Cousins

Do you love drinking beer and cannabis at the same time? This may be the reason why. Hops and cannabis are both under the Cannaceae family. Meaning they have similar properties as they both have terpenes and terpenoids. The difference is the lack of a certain enzyme in hops that transforms cannabigerolic acid into THC or CBD.

The Declaration of Independence was not Drafted on Hemp Paper

We hate to break it to you but the Declaration of Independence was not drafted or written on hemp paper. We have all been lied to. This idea is popular in the cannabis culture. But this urban legend turned out to be just that, a legend.

The truth is the Declaration was printed on parchment, commonly made from animal skin.
